April 7 - HED Wheels

Our HED wheels have just arrived and we are super excited about them! We have brought in the clincher tire versions of the Jet 60s and Jet 90s. Why do we like HED wheels so much? These wheels are just as fast the competition! They are less expensive than other brands. They have aluminum clincher rims that mean you do not need special brake pads, expensive and hard to maintain tires, as well as increased durability against impact! The Jet 60 is more suitable for riding in packs, or cross-winds while the Jet 90 is an excellent triathlon/timetrial wheel because of  it's superior aerodynamics.

Did you know that a clincher tire has a lower rolling resistance than a tubular? Hard to believe but the layer of glue that attaches a tubular to the rim increases it's rolling resistance.

Which is more important aerodynamics or weight? Aerodynamics is king until you are riding up at least a 5% grade and how much time do you spend climbing compared to riding on flat or gently rolling terrain? Think about it a bit and what is important becomes pretty obvious.

April 2 - Nathan Goes to World Masters Ski Championships

Last month Nathan made the trek to the World Masters cross-country ski championships with a small group from Saskatoon including two of our BCW club members - Robin & Kathy Butler.

The skiing in Idaho was amazing and Nathan came back with tons of cool stories from the experience.

Nathan also brought home some hardware from the week of racing: he scored a bronze in the 30km Classic and a gold in the 10km Skate races in the Canadian Masters Championships that were held in conjunction with the World Championships. Because of his strong performances in the individual events, Nathan was chosen to represent Canada as part of the relay team that won silver! Congrats Nathan!

June 1 - 29ers are race proven!

Have you heard any discussion on the biggest controversy in mountain biking - 26 versus 29 wheels? They are both race legal bikes now and but most have been hesitant to try the 29 inch tires in mountain bike races as popular thinking is they are heavier and slower.

With new products available big wheels don't necessarily mean a heavier bike. Five of our employees are racing 29inch mountain bikes this year and have equipped them with wheels that are lighter than Mavic Crossmax wheels, tires that are only 500g each and 85g inner tubes. The result is a bike that weighs as little as it's 26inch cousin.

So if the bike is the same weight as a 26 wheeled bike, how can it be slower? Big wheels roll over obstacles easier, providing a smoother ride that means less fatigue while riding. Big wheels have a larger contact patch with the ground which translates into lower rolling resistance, better floatation on sand or soft ground, more traction when climbing and better cornering performance.

At the 2006 Provincial Championships, 29ers finished 1st and 3rd in the Elite men's categoriy. These bikes are race proven and at Bruce's Cycle Works we believe in their benefits. Stop by and take a look at your options from Gary Fisher which has six models of 29er available.
